Well proven technology meets new tools

2011.12.06 by Randi Laukli
Patients with COPD can soon be offered a wide selection of tools and platforms to help them self-manage their illness. NST and Norut are making promising solutions available on devices such as mobile phones, tablets and ordinary TVs.

The project MyHealthService focuses on systems and services that promote an active lifestyle and improve the self-management skills of people with chronic illnesses. Health personnel have a supportive and guiding role.

Health through TV and mobile phone

- We do research on and develop health technology and personal services for elderly people with COPD and other related chronic diseases, such as cardiovascular diseases. Our services are trialled on different patient devices including TV with remote control, mobile phones and tablets. The choice of patient device depends on the service in question, user preferences and context, says research manager Lars K. Vognild at Norut.

Motivation for physical activity

The focus in 2010 has been on creating motivation for physical activity and exercise in daily life for people with COPD by developing services for a tablet device in combination with small inertial sensors to detect activity.

The home screen of the tablet device has an image that is positive when the user achieves personal activity goals. The home screen also has apps for an activity week plan, exercise video, and a weather widget.

- Physical activity is important for this patient group – it is a vital part of pulmonary rehabilitation, and also important to sustain the effect of rehabilitation, says Tatjana Burkow, project manager with NST.

European collaboration

The MyHealthService team cooperates with several European universities, and participates in several related EU-funded projects: Better Breathing (2007 – 2009), IS-ACTIVE (2009 – 2012) and Join-In (2010 – 2013).

In the years to come, research will focus on home-based rehabilitation services, motivation for physical activity in daily life, social support, and recommendation of systems.
