Project title: The Internet as a prevention arena for young people with mentally ill parents
Supervisor: Senior lecturer Sissel Eriksen, Institute for sociology, University of Tromsø

Project description:

The objective of the project is to discuss what an Internet-based support service for young people with mentally ill parents may mean from a health-promotion perspective. The study's empirical catchment area will be the Web site www.morild.org. It is an Internet-based support service for children and young people with mentally ill parents, run under the auspices of Sørlandet Hospital Trust through the Child and Adolescent Psychiatric Clinic R&D.

The project is included in a cooperative effort between the Norwegian Centre for Telemedicine (NST) and Sørlandet Hospital Trust through the Morild Net service. The objective of the collaboration is to extend the Web site's service offering with a closed self-help group for adolescents aged 15-18 years, where young people are given the opportunity to communicate with others in the same situation. The PhD project will be directed at the adolescents' experience of using the Internet-based support service, in relation to mastery of their own life situation.

The project has an exploratory focus, based on a form of normative process research. Methodically, a qualitative approach will be used. The project's problem formulations will be discussed in the light of perspectives associated with the use of technology in health-promotion activities, socialization with peers and sociocultural factors. A further aim is to discuss the subject of the project in relation to social theory about modernity.
