Project title: Image Texture Discrimination Using Gaussian Markov Random Fields in The Detection of Malignant Melanomas
Supervisors: Supervisor is Professor Fred Godtliebsen (IMS) and co-supervisor is researcher Vedad Hadziavdic (NST)

Project description:

The PhD project will be part of a larger research project at TTL, which aims to develop software for assisting physicians in the task of detecting malignant melanomas. Suspect skin lesions are photographed by means of a digital camera with a dermatoscope attached, and the resulting digital image is analysed by the software.

Such a system will need perform several more or less distinct tasks:
  • Texture detection. Separating the skin lesion from the background
  • Texture discrimination. Deciding what constitutes distinct structures
  • Texture classification. Deciding what category the texture belongs to
The work on the PhD project will mainly be focused on texture discrimination, and the goal is to develop new scale-space methods that utilise the power of GMRFs to improve texture discrimination. The same methods can also be used within the field of texture classification.

The developed algorithms are to be used for the analysis and follow-up of the evolution of pigmented skin lesions, with the aim of detecting malignant melanomas at an early stage of development.
