Telemedicine/e-health in resource-limited settings: sustain & scale

The Norwegian Center for Integrated Care and Telemedicine (NST) and The Institute of Tropical Medicine (ITM) in Antwerp organise jointly a Telemedicine and e-health workshop on how to scale up and sustain telemedicine and e-health systems in resource-limited settings. The workshop targets professionals who have worked with Telemedicine and e-health projects and policies over some time and/or are involved in coaching junior staff using ICT for health.

1. BACKGROUND
Telemedicine and e-health is ‘the delivery of health care and the exchange of health care information across stances’, which can be a major contributor in changing the pattern of healthcare services in developing regions, especially in poor rural areas. A sustainable e-health solution is the one that uses ICT resources to meet present health care needs without compromising the ability of future generations to meet countries long term e-health development plans.
Holistic and viable approach on these issues combined with innovative business models must be considered in order to make e-health solutions sustainable and able to grow. Therefore, it is necessary to provide evidence on sustainable e-health solutions and to facilitate new knowledge on different ways of achieving sustainable e-health solutions in developing regions. Successful examples of e-health projects must be critically evaluated and possible replication opportunities to other regions supported.

2. PROGRAM AND TEACHING METHOD
The workshop is conceived in an interactive case-based approach with hands-on sessions, accompanied by lectures, seminars and group discussions. Participants will present their project or programme to the group and set their specific learning goals for the one week workshop. The workshop will facilitate advisers (coaches) for each participant so that she/he can fully utilise the time. Each participant will have some part of the programme specifically tailored for their interest, it is therefore crucial that participants communicate with the organisers which areas they would like to focus on for the training.
The teaching method will consist of critical reading and practical sessions. The NST and ITM Antwerp staff will deliver most of the training. Internationally renowned experts from academic institutions and the field will be invited to complement specific areas of expertise.

3. DURATION OF THE WORKSHOP
The program lasts one week, starting on Monday 7 June 2010. See attached programme.

4. LANGUAGE
