TELEMEDICINE IN AFGHANISTAN? RESULTS FROM A FACT FINDING MISSION

In November 2001 the Taliban regime abandoned Kabul, being replaced with a new, more democratic government. Large donations were given by the western countries, Japan and Saudi Arabia to reconstruction work. Today, more than 250 relief organizations are present in Kabul.

The presentation will go through results from a fact finding mission the Norwegian Centre for Telemedicine did in June 2003. The results include surveys and status within health, existing infrastructure and education aimed at health care personnel on all levels and towards Afghan citizens. The government's priorites in the target areas will also be included. Some suggestions for telemedicine programmes will be presented, together with the foreseen potential telemedicine could have. Important obstacles to using telemedicine in Afghanistan today will also be included
