Kirsten Eriksen and Rigmor Furu, Norwegian Centre for Telemedicine
Abstract
Current situation The development of net-based education and training is given high priority within The Norwegian Centre for Telemedicine. A priority area, Net-based Education', has been established with the aim of ensuring the availability of education and training for all involved in the health sector, including health care workers, patients and their relatives.
Since the activity commenced in 1994, Net-based Education' has gained considerable expertise concerning education via videoconferencing. The training, organisation and co-ordination required for running the videoconference activity have been thoroughly tested and formalised throughout this period of practice. A strong network of co-operating partners in Norway has been established.
The project given highest priority now is the development of a learning gateway about health education on the Internet. Several net-based courses and educational programs combined with the use of multimedia and videoconferences will be offered at www.helseutdanning.no.
Pedagogical implications For the organizers of the lectures it is important to be aware of the theories of knowledge, values and attitudes. This will influence choices of pedagogical methods. Motivation is an important factor for the effects of learning. To create motivation and new learning we want to focus on knowledge based on earlier experiences.
We also have to pay attention to organisational matters, the technical infrastructure available and the significance of the human capital.
Conclusion We know that distant learning has many challenges to overcome the next years. The key to success depends on many factors. This presentation will focus on some of these. Both the students and the mentors are changing their roles. The pedagogical and organisational challenges are extensive to develop distant learning.
