Strålt - Telemedicine in radiotherapy

Decentralised radiotherapy and advanced treatment planning systems have introduced a new area in radiotherapy. In the project STRÅLT the possibilities in remote dose planning and supervision were investigated.

Project description

We aimed to explore remote treatment planning, supervision, second opinion and educational support in radiotherapy.

In the pilot, a 2Mbps line between the University Hospital of North Norway (UNN) and the Norwegian Radium Hospital (NRH) was established. The Helax-TMS treatment planning systems used at DNR and UNN were connected and videoconference units were installed at the two locations.

Remote supervision employing the videoconference units was tested between the Nordland Central Hospital and UNN. The treatment planning tests involved 2 constructed cases and 6 patients and a remote simulation procedure was carried out for 5 patients. A model based cost-minimising analysis (CMA) was employed.

Funding

The project was funded by a grant from the Norwegian Research council (1180/240)

Project period
