Tromsø Telemedicine and eHealth Conference 2008:

Power to the people

2008.06.12 by Lone Smelror
Listening to consumers in product development is important, said Anna Kirah in an inspiring presentation at the annual telemedicine conference in Tromsø, TTeC 2008.

Listening to consumers and paying attention to what they want and need can result in many exciting products. Most people want to take part in the processes involved in designing new products, said Anna Kirah at the telemedicine conference.

Doctor's appointment by SMS

- People know what suits them best, and what works and what does not work. An example could be something as simple as receiving an SMS reminder about a doctor's appointment, which automatically updates the calendar on your PC, instead of receiving a traditional appointment card on paper. This simplifies people's everyday life, and will become a common service, says Kirah.

Everyone has innovative capabilities

- From childhood onward, creativity is slowly but surely stifled by the norms and rules of our society -- not least on the home front. Letting children develop their creativity can give rise to the new products of the future.
Alle mennesker er kreative og har innovative egenskaper. Det er når vi slutter å spørre ”hvorfor” at kreativiteten blir lagt lokk på. Og når kreativiteten blir borte, stopper innovasjonen.

No Director of Innovation is needed

Instead of engaging external consultants to come up with new ideas and design new products, all business leaders should listen to their own employees first. An enterprise that learns to listen to the voices from the grassroots can save many consultant hours that are not necessary by involving its own staff, and increasing their motivation as well as their job satisfaction. They may come up with wonderful ideas that the management had not originally thought of.

At the end of her presentation, Anna Kirah encouraged everyone in the audience to open their minds to new opportunities, look at the world in a different way, and never forget that both head and heart must be involved in creating innovations.
