The purpose of the project is to provide a good, free of charge, interactive, web-based smoking cessation program and evaluate it.
The project aim is to develop the program further based on current research and health psychological theories. Offer the program to the Norwegian population free of charge. Assess whether the program helps users quit smoking and whether it increases self-efficacy. This will be accomplished through a randomized controlled trial that through questionnaires follows the users through 12 months.
The target group is everyone reading Norwegian with access to the Internet wanting to quit smoking.

Opptur is originally based on the Swedish CD-rom Dr SmokeFree by Hans Giljam. This was translated into a Norwegian web-based version by the Norwegian Cancer Society.
The project is funded by EXTRA funds from the Norwegian Foundation for Health and Rehabilitation, the Norwegian Research Counsil, the Directorate of Health and Social Affairs, the Norwegian Cancer Society, and the Norwegian Centre for Telemedicine.
The randomized controlled trial is planned to take place in the period March 1st 2006 until June 1st 2007, and the results are expected to be published by the end of 2008.
