Methodology - 2005 survey

National Poll Agencies made representative samples from the 7 participating countries, Greece, Portugal, Germany, Poland, Latvia, Denmark and Norway. The respondents were interviewed over the telephone.

The questionnaire was developed in English by the consortium, and then translated into the national languages using a "dual focus approach" (Erkut et al 1999). The dual focus approach is also called translation for meaning. The procedure consisted of two steps; 1) Gathering two bi - lingual translators (English - national language), and at least two project participants in a group discussing the translation of the questionnaire question by question, and 2) Running pilot interviews in a local focus group in each country.

National Poll Agencies were engaged to make the samples and conduct the interviews. Approximately 1000 respondents from each country were selected, with the exception of
Portugal where the sample consist of 2000 respondents.

A data quality check list was developed to ensure high quality data.
