Tele-education, intended as a way of delivering content as well as tutoring and evaluating communities of students, is one of the more
suitable topics for Internet-like satellite networks.
The Mayflower network will include the following infrastructures: - A star subnetwork, for asymmetric interactive communication services for corporate and SOHO (students) market segments. - A service center: located in Avezzano - Elsacom S.p.A. dedicated to host, process and manage content providers data and to manage the communication network. - A set of data management applications, developed by Kell s.r.l., including a multimedia data broadcast application that will be used to deliver educational contents.
All the products used are existing commercial products either produced or commercialized by contractors or low-cost commercial products. Apart from minor adjustments to Kell applications and to the network, Mayflower integrates existing technologies. The user community is large, international and representative of the market.
The target audience will be often located in North Africa and Middle-East, as well as Europe. This community has been chosen due to the high degree of diffusion of computer and multimedia web based systems, already used for tele-education in some case. This will enable the satellite network deployment in an already friendly community.
The project is divided in the following work packages:
Management The aim of this work package is to cover the general management of the project in order to ensure that it meets it's goals within the pre-determined time-scale.
Application Tools: definition and adaptation The aim of this work package is to update the application tools for Mayflower and define the Content to be handled during the Trial Phase.
Content Preparatoin & update This work package is dedicated to the management of the course content.
System Platform: architecture definition & network configuration. The aim of this work package is to define the network architecture and of the network configuration. Main results expected are the necessary implementation needed on the satcom Platform, in order to offer the services forecasted for the Pilot Activities.
User Environment: methodology & support The aim of this work package is to fix the operating procedures of the didactical procedures. For each course few simple procedures will be defined clearly identifying the steps to follow to carry out the task. In particular electronic scheduling forms and web information will coordinate the activity. In the framework of this WP also education of users to the platform will be carried out. Network implementation During this work-package, the network will be implemented. Every user will receive its equipment, procured during WP4.
The satellite equipment will be installed and configured at the user premises. Pilot trials The aim of this work package is to provide "distribution activities" regarding "Field Services", in order to test and confirm the validity of the main aspects, especially regarding useful information related to subsequent market launch.
Evaluation, information & promotion. The aim of this work package is to collect and publish on the web information and evaluations from the experts participating to Mayflower and carry outb commercial activity on potential customers.
