In 2005, the University of Tromsø launched a 2-year master's programme for education in telemedicine and eHealth. Students can choose between technology and health specialties. The master's programme is developed by and run in close collaboration between the University of Tromsø and the Norwegian Centre for Integrated Care and Telemedicine (NST).
The idea behind the development and introduction of telemedicine is to move information instead of patients and reduce the growing burden on the public health service. The master's programme in telemedicine and eHealth gives you an in-depth introduction to medical technology, how the health sector is organized, and the best ways to introduce telemedicine to provide an improved service to patients.
New students are admitted each autumn, and the language of instruction is English. The teaching is a combination of lectures and group work. All students write a final master's thesis, and it is possible to take parts of the programme abroad.

The need for more collaboration and better communication in the public health service is generating an ever-increasing demand for people with knowledge about telemedicine, technology and organizational challenges. This creates the potential for a steadily growing job market for employees with competence in telemedicine and eHealth. The master's programme qualifies you:
Those who choose the technology line of study participate in developing technological systems for telemedicine and eHealth. Students are offered courses in telemedicine and eHealth, medical informatics, informatics, physics and mathematics. The course requires competence in informatics or the equivalent. The last half-year of the programme is allocated to the final master's thesis.
This part of the programme focuses on how you can work with the organization of the public health service to achieve success in telemedicine. Students work in close collaboration with researchers and advisors at the Norwegian Centre for Integrated Care and Telemedicine, and they conduct interviews and observations of telemedicine projects in progress at the centre. The last of the two years of study is allocated to the master's thesis.
For students from Norway and the other Nordic countries, the deadline is April 15. Foreign students who finance their own stay, and students from developing countries, parts of Eastern Europe and the Palestinian self-governing areas who are applying via the quota programme must submit their applications by December 1.
More information about the programme and an electronic application form for admission to the programme is available in the English study catalogue for the University of Tromsø.
