I discovered Telemedicine and eHealth in Germany where I took courses of Medical Informatics and I did my project with Pr. Martin Staemmler. Medical Informatics was a great discovery for me because I have been always enthusiastic about biomedicine and also to see the human aspects of technology.
I don't see technology as a goal per se, but as a tool to help us. With Medical Informatics the goal is to help people to improve their health, it is fascinating field which could have a positive impact in the real life of millions of people.
When we search health information on the Internet we are overwhelm by the amount of information, which is becoming more complex all the time. In MyHealthEducator, my PhD project, we are looking how to assist the users to find relevant information in the context of the Web 2.0.
Our approach is to give recommendations of resources adapted to the users needs based on the data extracted from her Personal Health Record and the e-Community of patients. The system will be designed for the person and not a specific disease, as most of the projects do.
We are in the beginning of the eHealth revolution, most of information is still inaccessible and not integrated. In the future the information will be integrated and it will make possible to create personalized and smart eHealth services for the entire population.
The Web 2.0 phenomenon will play a major role in the future healthcare and the leadership of this revolution will be taken by the health consumers, modifying the way of our healthcare systems are conceived. Many challenges, such as impacts in the physician-patient relationship, and opportunities will raise.
I believe that eHealth and Web 2.0 will make possible to achieve a more person-centred medicine.
