Why I study telemedicine…

After working one year in a substitute position at Stavanger University Hospital, the hospital lacked money to appoint me into a full-position. I then decided to move to Tromsø because I was interested in extending my qualifications.

At that moment I did not know what telemedicine was except that it seemed very interesting and promising. After finishing the master degree I still feel telemedicine and e-health is very interesting and promising.

I am currently working on…

I started working as a PhD candidate in December 2007. My project is related to work flows within health care organizations and how well information systems are able to support this work flow. The main topic is integration (technically and socially).

My ideas about the future of health care…

I think the future health care system will be more standardized. I also hope the information systems in use will be more able to support the required work processes than they are today. Additionally, I also think that integration among various systems will be improved, thus enabling improved communication and integration independently on vendors and brands.

A lot of the complexities seen in health care organizations today are in fact related to lack of communication and lack of integration among both, people and information systems. Hopefully this will change as I think the future information systems will in much larger degrees be designed to support the required health care work processes.

My greatest source of inspiration is…

My greatest inspiration is an improved health care system where patients are treated equally independently on locations. As being a health care worker I know that the Norwegian health care system is very good. It really is! However, I have also noticed that things can be improved. I want to participate in making it better.
