After getting my Bachelor’s degree, I asked professor Fred Godtliebsen to be my supervisor on a Master’s degree. He proposed several different research projects for me to participate in, from climate to fishery industry. I decided upon the telemedicine project “Classification of Moles”, and ended up writing the Master’s thesis “Unsupervised Segmentation of Skin Lesions”. Just before handing in my thesis, I got a job offer from NST.
I started as a PhD-candidate 1st of January 2009. The name of the thesis is “Classification of Skin Lesions”. The final goal is a program that diagnoses a skin lesion (cancer/non-cancer) with high accuracy, using a digital image as input. The program is meant for general practitioners as a tool in diagnosing skin lesions. Today a lot of healthy skin lesions are excised and sent to pathological examination. In the future less healthy lesions will be excised, while more cancerous lesions will be detected at an early stage, increasing the survival rate of the patients.
As I grew up in the rural areas of Norway, I have seen the need for telemedicine from the pat ient’s point of view. For the public health care system to be able to serve the whole population equally good, there is no way around telemedicine.
The work itself is a great source of inspiration.
