Project description:The purpose of the PhD is to investigate context models for improving epidemiological searches by General Practitioners. Currently, as much as 80% of the information the GP bases his/her diagnosis on comes from the patient history. Epidemiological searches can be used to strengthen their decision making process by allowing them to incorporate additional information, such as recent incidences of diseases within the local population. The purpose of the context model being investigated is to help the GPs refine epidemiological searches by incorporating issues such as the patient’s history and context (i.e. symptoms, the patient’s own opinion about the causes of the problem, last known whereabouts, etc.). The PhD primarily addresses specifics of how context should be modeled in this case, and how it can be used for estimating the relevance and validity of information returned to the GP during epidemiological searches. The work is being conducted as part of a larger project with the aim of establishing a real-time contagious diseases surveillance and notification network between all general practitioners (GPs), laboratories, accident and emergency units, and other relevant health providers and authorities in Northern Norway. The project will create tools for automatic extraction and exchange of epidemiological data and tools for processing, presentation and early warning for outbreaks.
