International workshop in Tromsø 11-12 June

E-health for combating HIV/Aids

2005.05.18 by Hilde Pettersen
The Norwegian Centre for Telemedicine in collaboration with the University of Tromsø will organize a workshop on eHealth support for HIV/Aids. The aim of the workshop is to explore how eHealth can improve the quality of life for people living with HIV/Aids.

As a WHO Collaborating Centre for Telemedicine, the Norwegian Centre for Telemedicine  (NST) has been challenged to explore how telemedicine and eHealth can support people living with HIV/Aids - ecpecially targeting the regions most severely affected by the pandemic.

-         We have decided to organize the workshop in connection with the 46664 Arctic concert to join the forces for combating HIV/Aids, Tove Sørensen, head of the WHO-collaboration at NST, reports. The aim of the workshop is to discuss how telemedicine and eHealth can contribute to a better health care service for people living with HIV/Aids and provide recommendations for actions to be taken.

International participation
The programme is developed in collaboration with the workshop participants coming from South-Africa, Russia, Botswana, India, Belgium, UK and Malaysia, in addition to international organizations as the World Health Organization (WHO) and the International Salvation Army. Among the participants from  South Africa, we find
Samir Anand, project manager for Cell Life, University of Cape Town, who has developed a service for follow-up of HIV/Aids patient using cell-phones. From the Institute of Tropical Medicine in Belgium, Maria Zolfo will present a web-based advisory service for health care personnel. Michael Stein from UK/South-Africa will present "Map to Medicine", a database for GPs developed by the National Health Service (NHS) in the UK.

Action-plan
The work-shop will last for two days starting Saturday 11 June. There will be a short time-out for the 46664 Arctic concert Saturday evening, and continue Sunday morning.

-         By the end of the workshop, we expect to have developed a list of joint actions to be presented for the WHO. Also, we hope to be able to present the major results for the 46664 Arctic Expert panel which will take place on Sunday afternoon, Tove Sørensen says.

The work-shop is organized by the NST in collaboration with the WHO, University of Tromsø / Centre for International Health.
